Earth is most commonly honoured with a green candle in the North. It is associated with winter and midnight. It is the most complex of all the Elements; it is rich dark forests and fertile fields and green growing things, but it is also the strength and silence of solid rock. It is body and solid practicality; it is also the deep caves of the inner self, where we hide both our greatest treasures and our darkest fears. It is the home of the gods of field and forest, of goddesses of grain and harvest. It is also the realm of crones, of midwives, of dark and ancient gods.
Read up on Earth, as described by a number of different Wiccan authors. Study Earth suits in Tarot decks. What are the values and strengths of Earth? What are some of its negative aspects?
Cast a circle, invoking all four quarters as usual, but paying special attention to your invocation of Earth. Decorate the circle with symbols of Earth, burn an Earth incense, invoke Earth-related deities, etc. Do you know any chants specific to Earth? A Earth ritual is an especially good time for working with plants and herbs, for confronting old fears and hidden secrets -- or for addressing immediate and practical concerns in the everyday world. It's a good time to make talismans, or to consecrate Earth-related tools. An Earth ritual should leave you feeling thoroughly rooted and centred and nourished. At the end of the ritual, thank and dismiss the other Elements, but ask Earth to gently guide your learning over the next few days.
During the week, pay attention to the many manifestations of Earth in your life. Note rocks and dust and all things made from them. Feel the solidity of your own bones and body. Explore your sense of touch. Notice green growing things around you. Plant something, or gather the harvest of an existing plant. Spend some time in dark or shadowed or underground places. Look for old and enduring things. Tend to practical concerns. Wear dark or earthy colours. Are there any unresolved Earth-related issues in your life?
At the end of the week, cast another Earth-rich circle. Make notes in your BoS about the lessons Earth has taught you over the past week. Take a blank sheet of paper and fill it, stream-of-consciousness style, with words and phrases and fragments relating to Earth. Thank the powers of Earth for the lessons of the past few days, then as you end the ritual bid them a firm "Hail and Farewell."
Take a few days to restore the balance among the Elements in your life before beginning the next exercise.Copyright © 1995, 1997, Margarian Bridger
